As we get closer and closer to the holidays, our schedules fill up and pressure can build. We may have to see family that we, well, let’s just say family that we don’t normally see, feel obligated to attend parties, or, because of a recent loss or life event, not feel particularly in sync with the upcoming holidays.
Self care is so important during this time – but sometimes, our self care plan involves that pecan pie or plate of cookies.
Now, I’m not saying that’s bad. Not at all – in fact, the good news is, indulgence does play a role in self care! Pass me that cheese ball, please!
The problem arises when self care is based on indulgence.
Self care is usually harder in the short run, but in the long run, it makes our life easier. Indulgence, on the other hand, is easier in the short run…but not so supportive in the long run. Self care can involve cookies and bubble baths and tator tots. But it also involves checking your finances, meeting deadlines at work, moving and exercise, and reaching out for help when you need it.
So – take care of yourself during the holidays. Enjoy those treats! And then think about the things that you’ve been putting off that you can do today to make your life a little easier.
