A layer of ash, a gray haze, a fog that comes between me and the world. That’s how depression can feel. Drenched in gray, everything seems haunted by sadness, futility, and despair.
Even worse, depression can rob us of the energy we need to do the simple things we know would help: call a friend, take a walk, play with the dog. We feel drained, and we blame ourselves for the way we feel. Fatigue leads to confusion, confusion leads to anxiety, and anxiety gradually tears at our peace of mind.
The loss of motivation, of hope, may feel like it’s here to stay. But it’s not.
My clients learn how to recognize the physical, emotional, and spiritual contours of depression, and learn how to address each one in appropriate, effective ways.
Through talk therapy, we get to see that we’re not alone, and that we have passed through the gray before. My clients learn specific tools to deal with intrusive and self-defeating thoughts. Together, we develop resilience, perspective, and motivation.
We also talk about patterns of daily living that can reinforce the cycle of depression, and alternatives to break the cycle. Nutrition, exercise, and meditation can each provide relief from the symptoms of depression, and simply help us feel good about ourselves.
That good feeling is the key to breaking the cycle of depression. If you’d like to learn more about I help my clients get out of the gray, email me, or call my office at 202-550-3589. Or, if you’re ready to make an appointment, you can schedule by clicking the button below.
