Sometimes, things happen that overwhelm our own ability to continue feeling safe in this world.
Sometimes, they are specific events that have occurred in our lives that you may well have thought that you had dealt with.
Sometimes, the events are hard to pin point – but there is a feeling of deep, underlying fear that seems to constantly be knocking at the door of your consciousness.
Trauma is a normal response to an abnormal event. Or, as Holocaust survivor Victor Frankl put it, “an abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior.” But this normal response can be painful. It can interrupt our sleep, create a pervasive sense of worry, and make concentration on daily tasks impossible.
Trauma comes in many forms. You might be struggling with a single overwhelming event like an accident, assault, or medical emergency. Or perhaps you’re carrying the weight of repeated experiences that eroded your sense of safety over time—childhood neglect, ongoing discrimination, or systematic abuse. I work with all types of trauma, including complex trauma, intergenerational trauma, and religious trauma from harmful faith experiences or spiritual manipulation.
The impact of trauma can manifest in various ways: intrusive memories that appear without warning, emotional numbness that disconnects you from loved ones, hypervigilance that leaves you constantly on edge, or avoidance behaviors that increasingly limit your life. You might find yourself questioning deeply held beliefs about yourself, others, or the world. These reactions aren’t signs of weakness—they’re your mind and body’s attempts to protect you.
Therapy can help. Talking to someone in a trusted and safe environment can lead to not just healing, but to post-traumatic confidence. Together, we’ll work at a pace that feels manageable for you, developing skills to regulate overwhelming emotions, process difficult memories, reconnect with your body’s wisdom, and rebuild a sense of safety and meaning. Whether your trauma is recent or happened decades ago, whether it’s tied to personal experiences or spiritual communities, the path toward healing is possible.
My approach combines evidence-based trauma techniques with compassionate understanding of how trauma affects the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. I create a space where all parts of your experience are welcomed and honored, including questioning or reclaiming spiritual beliefs that may have been damaged through traumatic experiences.
